Sketchbook

I am drawing a lot, just keep forgetting to add it on here.

This is my first sketch in my new Starwars themed moleskin. It's pretty!

Some HP love

I have a problem ok.

Some sculpture

A little while ago I cast my face in plaster and I am now sculpting over it. Not exactly sure where this came from, it started out as a wolf/man thing. Now it's a grumpy reluctant hero monster with a broken tooth. Not gonna ask what that says about me.

aaaaahhhh

Now if I could create sketches that looked like these I would die a happy bunny.

I think The Black Cauldron was highly under rated, don't you?

Crazy Thursday: Part 2

So after I had this lovely day I had to rush back into town (which took about 2 hours die to crazy traffic) so that I could get back to my first sculpture workshop.
This is the first of a few so I'll hopefully have more to show you soon.
The first session was on face casting which I've never done before. So, here is my face!

I look rather strained because I am semi claustrophobic and I was desperately trying not to panic underneath the alginate. With only small nose holes to breath out of all I could think of was if I panicked I would faint! But the rest of the casting process was really fun and I think we get another go at the end of the course, I will be braver and pull a better face.
I will be using this cast as a base and intend to build an even more interesting face onto the top of it. We'll see how that goes.

Crazy Thursday: Part 1

So my last Thursday was semi insane but rather brilliant too. I was live drawing most of the day at Venturefest Bristol which took place in a rather beautiful building on the outskirts.

This picture was taken at the end of the day (hence the lovely purply sky)

Lorna Picton organised the live draw part of the business event and I think everyone got really stuck in.
Here are some pictures that I took from the day -
I managed to get three letters done, an 'I', an 'O' and an 'N'

I should never build houses.

Some Eco houses

So I was trying to think how I could incorporate wind farms into an interesting and sweet illustration and I was thinking of making an eco house made from a wind turbine. But there was only so much I could do without researching eco houses. So have some pictures -

I think I prefer the rounded house look. So it sort of looks like a hillock from the back. I was thinking I could make a small windfarm on the back of it, like flowers or something. I don't know. Still collecting ideas at the moment.

Some 'eco art' -

I have also been looking at some illustrators for inspiration. This guy is rather brilliant Jon Klassen

Venturefest

I have recently been given the opportunity to work at the business networking conference Venturefest/ sciencecitybristol. The brief is to design something to do with Science and Technology to be put on huge letters using black markers. It's a really exciting opportunity but with such an open brief it's time for some research.
I want my piece to be on Greener energy sources, focusing mostly on wind farms.

(I really like the style of this advert, simple but effective as I would like my peice to be.)

Some picture research -

Re-blog

These are from my 3rd year Production blog - Don't Step on the Crack I thought I'd re-blog them here as they fit in nicely with my design work. Also, I didn't want the first thing people see on my blog to be the Disney Doll set... It's a tad embaressing.

Anyway, these are make using photocollage on Photoshop.

Some Drawing

I've been in a good drawing place for the last couple of days so I thought I'd share.

(Been in a bit of a Potter spell)

On the Potter note, check this wonderous place out ... http://www.gallerynucleus.com/blog/harrypotter

(Young Hermione's first visit to the library)

This is a character I've been doodling over the past couple of days. Not sure it's really going anywhere. I really need to work on props and scenes for my characters.

LIfe Drawing

So it was our first session of life drawing at L3. I really enjoy life drawing alot, but I was a bit worried cause it's been a while. I'm a bit rusty, but overall I don't think they came out too bad.

Character Design

I have just read this and realized that I have missed some vital things in my designs. I have only just scratched the surface on my characters which makes them too 2 dimentional.
I'm still learning but my characters are going to be ridiculously over thought from now on!

Some sketches for my male protaganist.

These are just test sketches. He has to be young (4-6) and cute and likeable.

A long and short summer

Well, the winter is definalty rolling in at an alarmingly fast pace. As always summer has not felt like long enough for the list of things I had set out to do at the beginning.
But onwards and upwards.
I did not feel like I did amazingly well at the end of my second year, not as well as I had wanted really. So, this being the ledgendary third year and all, I endevour to try harder.
I have a pretty strong idea for a film which I would like to make this year, but I am feeling a little lost as to what to do afterwards. I bearly have a portfolio or showreel to speak of, through my own doing ofcourse and I'm rather worried about my hireability.
I'm hoping that rejoining everyone else and getting some much needed advice will help.

Anyway, I came across this yesterday and thought it was rather lovely.

Friday 8 July 2011

I am aaaaaliiiiiiiiiiive!

So it may seam that since finishing uni for the summer I have done diddly squat. In regards to blogging you would be correct in this assumption.
However, I have been trying to get some things done for an oh so wow-some competition. Unfortunately I mucked up the deadlines and so missed handing it in. But I worked hard on it and at least I have some things to put in my portfolio.

The competition was this
Basically you had to come up with a new design to illustrate Beauty and The Beast. And if you won it would be, to quote The Incredibles, 'totally Wicked!'
For the first round we had to show three character designs and a double spread illustration.

'Before leaving, he asks his daughters whether they desire that he bring them any gift upon his return. His two elder daughters ask for jewels and fine dresses, thinking that his wealth has returned; Belle is satisfied with the promise of a rose, as none grow in their part of the country.'

Cue huge over haul. It was decided that this style was over cute and probably slightly patronising. So I went the other way and decided to make something that was a bit different and probably more gruesome.

'Upon picking the most lovely rose he finds, the merchant is confronted by a hideous 'Beast', which tells him that for taking his (the Beast's) most precious possession after accepting his hospitality, the merchant must die.'

'Upon returning, Belle finds the Beast almost dead, and she weeps over him, saying that she loves him.'
